40 millions in military.
Even though France had emerged victorious in the World War I, France suffered enormous casualties during this war. France lost some 1,397,800 soldiers and about 300,000 of civilians died in this war. France had lost a small portion of it's terrain in this war which had been conquered by Germany and in the South a puppet regime had been installed.
